Canada achieved its target of 401,000 immigrants. And now, waiting for more!

IRCC achieved its objective of transitioning temporary residents to permanent residents last year. Canada still is considering inviting skilled professionals to the region as Permanent Residents.

Last year has witnessed a whopping number of PRs in Canada. Such a thing happened only in 1867.

In the year 2020, only 1 84,000 immigrants landed in Canada. This was because of the Pandemic. But now, Canada is eyeing skilled professionals to settle in the country and contribute proactively to its economy.

Canada mainly focused on transitioning the existing workers into Permanent Residents. Earlier, many foreign workers landed in Canada under the aegis of PR. But the last year saw a tweak in the immigration plan with many temporary workers in Canada obtaining a permanent resident legal status.

In the official immigration website of Canada, it has been stated that “Before the pandemic, about 30 percent of new economic-class immigrants were already in the country when they got permanent residency, while about 70 percent moved from abroad. In 2021, this was reversed, with some 70 percent landing from within Canada and about 30 percent arriving from overseas.

Some of the changes include holding Express Entry draws that target Canadian Experience Class (CEC) candidates and launching six streams in May to offer pathways to permanent residence to as many as 90,000 international students and temporary foreign workers living in Canada.

This year, Canada got off to a slow start before ramping up landings in June. In the pre-COVID days, Canada landed between 25,000 and 35,000 immigrants per month, increasing figures during the warmer spring and summer months. Since June, Canada has consistently landed over 35,000 new permanent residents each month, and in recent months has exceeded 45,000 landings per month.”

In today’s news release, immigration minister Sean Fraser stated, “Last year, we set an ambitious goal. Today, we achieved it. This is a historic moment for our country, as we welcome the highest number of newcomers in a century. I want to thank all the employees in my department, especially our Operations Sector, who made this possible. Canada is built on immigration, and we will continue to safely welcome the immigrants that Canada needs to succeed. I can’t wait to see the incredible contributions that our 401,000 new neighbors make in communities across the country.”
