The federal agency states that Canada's population growth was the lowest quarterly growth in 64 years for the three months ended on September 30 of this year. Canada has not seen such a low rate of quarterly population growth since January 1, 1946. In the third quarter of this year, Statscan reports, the Canadian population increased by just 2,767 people.
In Canada, there are just over 38 million inhabitants. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, a sharp decline in the rate of growth was seen, but not solely due to coronavirus deaths. As devastating as these were, from July through to the end of September, they amounted to just 706 of the 69,114 total deaths. Losses in international migration have had the greatest demographic impact on the total population.
During that quarter, the Canadian was hit by a decline in net migration of 27,143 as foreign students were unable to come to Canadian universities and schools, prohibited from traveling due to COVID-19 border restrictions.
The population decreased significantly in states and territories since 1951. British Columbia is down by over 2000 people, and some other territories, down by 1,105 people, the biggest declines by number.
Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Manitoba, Alberta, and the Yukon were among the provinces whose populations grew marginally during that portion. Alberta has seen the largest population bump, growing by 6,236, or a tenth of a percent.

Compared to the number of people who migrated to Canada over the same time last year the number of immigrants arriving during the third quarter of this year fell by 61.4 percent.
During the third period of this year, Canada accepted 40,059 immigrants but lost almost 66,000 non-permanent residents, mainly foreign students.
On the positive side, as the 99,024 births outnumbered the deaths, Canada saw some natural population increase during that time. This is not the first time that Statscan has come out with quarterly results showing a drastic reduction in immigration to Canada as a result of border restrictions during the pandemic and a serious effect on its population growth.
Earlier this year the national statistics agency of the federal government outlined the rollercoaster ride that has seen a population increase in Canada over the past year.
Canada's rate of population growth fell during the second quarter of this year to what is now the lowest level since statistics began to be maintained, after reaching the highest reported level of population growth in the third quarter of last year due to high levels of immigration.
"At the end of the first quarter of 2020, the global pandemic began to affect the demographic patterns in Canada," the federal agency reported in the previous report.
Canada's first COVID-19 deaths were confirmed on March 9, and mid-March began with international border constraints. Along with the excess mortality rate, the resulting decline in migration from March to June contributed to the low population for the second quarter of the 2020s.
The average age of the Canadian population has gradually increased over the past five decades or so. It was no different last year. From Canada Day last year to this year, the average age of Canadians grew from 41.3 to 41.4 years old. Canada relies heavily on immigration for population growth because of its aging population and low birth rate.
For the year immigration accounted for 81.9 percent of the nation's population increase, with the country accepting 284,387 immigrants, down from more than 300,000 for each of the previous two years.
