What is IELTS?
The International English Language Testing System or IELTS Is a standardized test that assesses your proficiency in English. There are four modules in the IELTS exam:
- Reading
- Writing
- Speaking
- Listening
Different types of IELTS:
There are two types of IELTS. One is the General, and the other is the Academic Module. The General Module is for students aspiring to settle down in other countries as Permanent Residents. Academic IELTS is for people who want to pursue Higher Education in any foreign country.
IELTS Test Format:
Listening:
There are 40 Questions. A variety of questions are asked in the Listening Module. The Listening Module is the same for both the General and Academic IELTS Test.
Section 1:
You will listen to a conversation between people set in an everyday social setting. (e.g., Conversation in a hostel/hotel/outside the library, etc.)
Section 2:
You will listen to a monologue set in an everyday social context. (e.g., Talk about a brochure, a menu card in the hotel, etc.)
Section 3:
You will listen to a group conversation of up to 4 people. (E.g. University students and professors discussing the results of a test/ discussing a question paper or any other topic.)
Section 4:
You will listen to a monologue on an academic subject (e.g., University Lecture?)
Reading:
There are 40 questions asked in this segment. The reading module has three passages, and you will get to spend around 20 minutes on each passage. The reading tasks are different for academic and general modules. The reading texts of IELTS have a higher level of complexity. Until and unless you undergo training in the hands of an expert, it might not be easy to come up with a good band score in reading.
Writing:
The Writing test, too, is different for General and Academic Modules. The total time allotted for IELTS Writing Module is 1 hour. Within this time frame, you need to complete two tasks. The first task is a letter for General IELTS and a Graph Description for Academic IELTS. The 2nd task is an essay that seeks your argument in a timeframe of 40 minutes. Writing is a complex skill, and you will certainly need expert guidance to score well.
Speaking:
The speaking segment is the same both for Academic and General IELTS. Here is the test format:
Section 1:
The examiner will introduce themselves and ask you to do the same. They then will ask a series of general questions.
Section 2:
You will be given a task card that will list some topics you can talk about. You will be given a short amount of time to prepare what you want to say. The instructor can then ask you a few questions on your topic.
Section 3:
The assessor will then ask more questions on the topic you chose in section 2. They will be looking for more comprehensive answers.
Remember, the IELTS speaking segment is not an interview. It is a test of your communication skills. It would be best if you talked well and confidently. It would help if you also gained fluency, grammatical accuracy, and accent before appearing for this Segment. Our expert trainers will see to it that you are trained very well for this segment of IELTS.
