Learn about the Shortage Occupations in Canada!

To invite skilled professionals sooner to Canada and make them contribute to its economy, Canada launched the New Canadian Express Entry System in January 2015. This new system replaced the earlier ‘first come, first serve’ system that was prevalent during those times. The Express Entry System came up with a point-based ranking system - CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System) for managing the applications of immigrants who have applied for Canada PR Visa through the following three major federal economic immigration programs:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

Express entry is the fastest way to immigrate to Canada, if you think that you have skills to contribute toward Canadian economy. The Express system allows skilled professionals to migrate to Canada in as little as 6 to 8 months. There are 347 eligible occupations that are available for skilled workers in Canada. By submitting their expression of interest profile (EOI) in the express entry pool, these candidates can bag a plum job and settle in Canada.

The most eligible profiles are invited through periodically and frequently held entry draws for the PR Visa. After getting the ITA, skilled professionals will have 60 days to submit their application to the IRCC (Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada).

These are the eligibility conditions to apply for the federal skilled visa program:

  • Have a minimum of continuous one year of work experience or equivalent part-time work experience in the past 10 years in one of 347 eligible occupations that are listed under NOC  (National Occupation Classification) system - Canada skill-shortage list 2021;
  • Work experience must be in a skilled occupation that is categorized in NOC Skill level O (Managerial occupations), A (Professional Occupations), or B (Technical professions and Skilled Trades). You can check your NOC code and all the details related to the profession like roles & responsibilities, examples, etc. in our Canada NOC list;
  • Score a minimum of 67 points in federal skilled worker points assessment grid;
  • Show minimum required language proficiency level with the cut-off set at  CLB level 7 or 6 per band in IELTS;
  • You must have sufficient funds to cater to your requirements in Canada;

On September 21st 2021, Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) and Statistics Canada released the new National Occupational Classification (NOC) 2021 for data collection purposes. ESDC’s programs are expected to start the implementation process of the NOC 2021 in late 2022 as survey and census data based on the new classification becomes available.
